What are Parental Leave Benefits?

Under South Korean law, parental leave benefits are paid to workers who take parental leave to raise a child aged 8 or younger, or in 2nd grade of elementary school or below.

2025 Revision Details (Same for 2026)

  • Months 1-3: 100% of ordinary wage (cap 2.5M KRW)
  • Months 4-6: 100% of ordinary wage (cap 2.0M KRW)
  • Months 7-12: 80% of ordinary wage (cap 1.6M KRW)
  • Minimum: 700,000 KRW/month (applies to all periods)
  • Payment: 75% advance + 25% deferred after return to work

2026 Related Policy Changes NEW

  • Maternity leave benefit: cap raised from 2.1M to 2.2M KRW/month
  • Reduced working hours benefit: cap raised from 2.0M to 2.2M KRW/month
  • Paternity leave bonus: raised from max 3.0M to 4.0M KRW
  • Note: Basic parental leave benefit caps remain the same as 2025.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must have 180+ days of Employment Insurance coverage
  • Must have a child aged 8 or under, or in 2nd grade of elementary school or below
  • Must be granted parental leave of 30 days or more

How to Apply

Apply through the Employment Insurance website or your local Employment Center. Applications must be filed from 1 month after the start of parental leave until 12 months after the end of leave.

2025년 1월 1일 개정 기준(2026년 동일)으로 1~3개월은 통상임금의 100%(상한 250만원), 4~6개월은 통상임금의 100%(상한 200만원), 7~12개월은 통상임금의 80%(상한 160만원)이 지급됩니다. 하한액은 월 70만원으로 전체 기간에 동일하게 적용됩니다. 지급액의 75%는 육아휴직 중 매월 지급되고, 나머지 25%는 복직 후 6개월 이상 근무 시 일시 지급됩니다.

육아휴직 급여는 언제 신청해야 하나요?

What is Parental Leave?

Parental leave is a statutory leave system that workers can apply for to raise a child aged 8 or under or in 2nd grade of elementary school or below, based on the Act on Equal Employment and Support for Work-Family Reconciliation. Workers with 180 or more days of Employment Insurance coverage can use it regardless of gender, for up to 1 year. The parental leave period is included in the length of service and is also reflected in retirement pay calculation.

How Parental Leave Benefits Are Paid

Parental leave benefits are divided into advance payment (75%) and deferred payment (25%). The advance payment is paid monthly during parental leave, and the deferred payment is paid in a lump sum when the worker returns to the same workplace after parental leave and works continuously for 6 months or more. Accurate calculation of ordinary wages is important as the payment amount is determined by ordinary wages.

2026 Parental Leave Related Changes

In 2026, the maternity leave benefit cap was raised from 2.1 million to 2.2 million KRW, and the reduced working hours benefit cap was also raised from 2.0 million to 2.2 million KRW per month. The paternity leave bonus was also increased from a maximum of 3.0 million to 4.0 million KRW to encourage both parents' participation in childcare. The basic parental leave benefit caps (2.5M / 2.0M / 1.6M KRW) remain the same as 2025.
